According to the World Health Organisation, coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe illnesses. Covid -19 is a type of coronavirus that is now affecting over 162 countries out of 195.

While we adhere to the precautionary measures that prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is important to strengthen the defenses in our body through responsible and healthy nourishment. Having a healthy immune system means that our bodies can fight the virus.
Within the community there are a great variety of foods that grow and are produced that can cover the needs of our families and of those elders who live alone.

December 18th is International Migrants Day – in this radio program, we look at factors that cause the migration of Indigenous Peoples, and we also explore some of the impacts of migration.
We spoke to Job Morris, from the San Youth Network, who tell us about the impacts of urbanization on San communities in Botswana that have resulted because of migration.

Limited access to basic health services remains a big problem for Indigenous communities across all continents. Indigenous populations in many countries have experienced poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. Mainstream health services have not adequately met the health needs of Indigenous Peoples in both rural and urban settings.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.

Covid-19 is still a grave reality, now with a new strain of the virus spreading across the world. When the pandemic first began, we did not expect it to last this long, and no one expected that it would spread so widely and have such a disastrous impact. As we move into 2021, it continues to be crucial to maintain social distance, avoid large groups of people, wash or sanitize our hands and wear masks consistently to stop the spread of the virus.

The United Nations General Assembly (Resolution A/RES/74/135) proclaimed the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022-2032), to draw global attention on the critical situation of many indigenous languages and to mobilize stakeholders and resources for their preservation, revitalization and promotion.
Cultural Survival partnered with the Botswana Khwedom Council to revitalize the Tsiga language, which is disappearing. Keikabile Mogodu tells us more.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a high-level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council.
The twenty-first session of the Permanent Forum is taking place from April 25th to May 6th, 2022, at UN Headquarters, New York.
In this interview, Cultural Survival's Director of Programs Avexnim Cojti (Maya Ki’che) speaks to Diphetogo Anita Lekgowa (San) from the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC) about Indigenous language revitalization efforts in Africa.

One of the top priorities at COP28 is to finalize the inaugural Global Stocktake (GST), which serves as the primary means of evaluating advancements towards the objectives established in the Paris Agreement. The GST presents nations with a chance to evaluate their current climate initiatives and determine areas where additional action is necessary.
Cultural Survival attended COP28 in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, and spoke to some of the delegates who attended.

The Nama people of Botswana are a small Indigenous community belonging to the wider Khoekhoe cultural and linguistic group of southern Africa. They live mainly in the southwestern parts of the country, especially around the Kgalagadi region, where their history is closely tied to pastoralism, herding livestock in arid environments. The Nama language, Khoekhoegowab, is known for its distinctive click sounds, though today many Nama also speak Setswana or Afrikaans.

Sara Olsvig(Inuit), the International Chair of Inuit Circumpolar Council, calls on States and the UN to recognize Indigenous Peoples' distinct identity. She urges them to uphold the UN Declaration on their Rights and incorporate its principles in all UN documents.
