An Update On The Struggle Of Indigenous Fisher Folk In South Africa (Afrikaans Language)

In this interview, John Cloete from Radio West Coast  interviews Naomi Cloete, a small-scale fisher from Paternoster, and they talk about the reality of the poverty that fishermen live in, they talk also about how generation after generation of fisher-boys become fishermen because there simply is no other life for them on these shores. Naomi also tells us how fisher folk has to suffer, partly because of policy but more worryingly by the national silence that shrouds the Indigenous Peoples of the Western cape coastlines.

During every COP gathering, individuals and organisations who defend the land and environment, as well as Indigenous communities, voice their need for increased safeguards for their territories against industries that harm the environment, including mining, logging, and industrial agriculture. Climate organizations like Global Witness frequently send delegates to advocate for quick and ambitious measures to address the climate emergency.
Cultural Survival attended COP28 in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, and spoke to some of the delegates who attended.

World Radio Day 2024

Radio has been over for over a century and it is still relevant today, probably more than it has ever been. Let us look at some of the reasons why: Radios are portable, unlike television. Radios are cheaper as compared to television sets. Indigenous peoples use radio as a means of communication, especially in remote areas.

International Mother Language Day 2024

Language diversity, multilingual education, and the development of a deeper appreciation of linguistic and cultural traditions worldwide are all encouraged by the dissemination of mother tongues. The purpose of this program is to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance, and dialogue, and to remind us of the vital role that languages play in preserving and transmitting cultural heritage.
To commemorate International Mother Language Day we got in touch with correspondents from Progress Radio In Nigeria, who filled us in on the significance of mother tongue in that region.

The Impact Of Climate Change On The Fisherfolk Of South Africa 1

On the South Coast of South Africa, is a small town called Arniston, where local people, who are descendants of Khoi and San people, make a living as small-scale fishers.
Arniston also has ancient fish traps, dating back thousands of years.
Arniston is a charming coastal town located in the Overberg region of South Africa. It is situated near Cape Agulhas, which is widely known as the southernmost tip of Africa.

Youth In Need Of Self Belief And Positive Role Models

The youth population was projected to increase by over 78 million from 2021 to 2030, with low-income countries contributing to nearly half of this growth. It is essential for education and training systems to adapt to this challenge.

High-quality apprenticeships, carefully planned internships, and volunteering programs can serve as valuable entry points into the job market for first-time jobseekers and recent graduates.

Jean Mary Tjiohimba, who is from the Khwe community of South Africa talks to us about the successes and struggles of the Youth in her community.

More Than Just A Servant - Krotoa Reimagined

Krotoa, also known as Eva, was a young Khoi woman who played a significant and complex role in early South African history during the Dutch colonial period. Taken in as a servant in the household of Jan van Riebeeck, the first Dutch commander at the Cape, Krotoa served as a translator and cultural mediator between the Dutch settlers and her indigenous Khoi people. Fluent in both Dutch and Khoikhoi languages, she became a vital link in early negotiations and trade.

Remembering The Slave Trade: Episode 1 - Early Colonial South Africa

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually on August 23rd, honors the millions of men, women, and children who were subjected to the brutalities of transoceanic slavery, and commemorates the uprisings and resistance that led to its eventual abolition. This day not only acknowledges the resilience and courage of the enslaved but also recognizes the often-overlooked roles played by Indigenous peoples.
