La “Cumbre Indígena sobre Transición Justa: Perspectivas, Conocimientos y Experiencias Vividas de los Pueblos Indígenas” se llevó a cabo del 8 al 10 de octubre de 2024 en Ginebra, Suiza. En este evento participaron cerca de 100 delegados de los Pueblos Indígenas de las 7 regiones socioculturales, quienes denunciaron las afectaciones que se viven en sus territorios debido a la llegada de proyectos para la generación de “energía verde”, así como reflexionaron cómo sería una transición energética verdaderamente justa.

From October 31 until November 12, 2021, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP 26) is happening in Glasgow, Scotland.
For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on Earth for global climate summits. In that time, climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

At this year's United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP 26) in Glasgow, Scotland, Cultural Survival spoke with Frank Ettawageshik (Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians), Executive Director of the United Tribes of Michigan and President of Association on American Indian Affairs, who has been involved in international Indigenous rights advocacy for decades, about Indigenous leadership in climate action. 

As Covid-19 sweeps across the globe, it is wreaking havoc and leaving behind a trail of destruction. In this radio program we check in with Nelson Ole Reiya, CEO of the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy in Kenya, to find out about the current situation of the Maasai people in his region.

While countries all over the world are on lockdown, and panic is the order of the day, this is a time when Indigenous Peoples around the world are encouraged to stay calm, and be strong, in the face of severe adversity.
What is most important to note, is that our elderly are the most vulnerable. We need to take extra precaution to save the lives of the ones who are dear to us, and the ones who have shown us the way to go, who have guided our feet on the path that we all walk.

While we adhere to the precautionary measures that prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is important to strengthen the defenses in our body through responsible and healthy nourishment. Having a healthy immune system means that our bodies can fight the virus.
Within the community there are a great variety of foods that grow and are produced that can cover the needs of our families and of those elders who live alone.

The Covid-19 Pandemic is upon us, and we all need to adhere to all the hygiene protocols.
While it is important to ensure the well-being of our elders in the time of this global pandemic, let us take care of our children too. If this is new for us, imagine the psychological impact it has on our young ones. Take the time to explain it to them, first hand, as opposed to what they see and hear on social media, television and radio.

Limited access to basic health services remains a big problem for Indigenous communities across all continents. Indigenous populations in many countries have experienced poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. Mainstream health services have not adequately met the health needs of Indigenous Peoples in both rural and urban settings.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.

In November 2021, the 26th Conference of the parties is being held in Glasgow.
Cultural Survival’s Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications Daisee Francour (Oneida) attended the summit and spoke to Carson Kiburo, Executive Director of the Jamii Asilia Centre, who is a youth leader and a community organizer from the Endorois Peoples of Kenya. He works on Indigenous Peoples' rights, youth empowerment, and global governance.

A new community radio station is set to launch in Kenya with the help of a grant from Cultural Survival’s Indigenous Community Media Fund as well as funding from Cultural Survival’s partner WACC. The radio station will be broadcast in the Rendille language and will focus on preserving the community’s language and culture as well as keeping the local people in Laisamis Sub-County, which is home to five different Indigenous Tribes, well-informed about issues that affect them.

The Yiaku people of Kenya have been living in the Makugodo Forest for a long time as hunter-gatherers.
In the past decade, the Kenyan government has asked them to officially manage the forest.
The forest has been thriving under their care.
