El Colectivo de Mujeres Ajchowen está integrado por mujeres de Iximulew (Guatemala), cuya pasión por el arte y el teatro las ha llevado a viajar desde sus comunidades y territorios para crear obras que motiven a otras mujeres. Los minerales de transición son llamados así porque se busca que poco a poco reemplacen el uso de combustibles fósiles, es decir, son minerales usados para la llamada “transición energética”, sin embargo, en muchos casos se están extrayendo de los territorios de los Pueblos Indígenas, violando derechos fundamentales de los mismos. Mariia Savvina (Sakha) is an independent artist, fashion designer, and creator of the fashion brand o5o who is originally from Yakutsk, Sakha Republic. In this conversation, Mariia tells us about her training and journey as an artist and her experiences showing her collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia. She also talks about her practice of melding Sakha traditions with the contemporary and the importance this fusing has on both personal and professional levels.

Indigenous communities need to work with States to develop mechanisms that prevent violence against women.

States should work with indigenous communities to ensure that national laws reflect the rights of Indigenous Peoples as laid out in the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The rights of Indigenous Peoples must be enacted fully and mechanisms which monitor and review the implementation of these rights are needed to ensure that States are complying with international law.

The right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent means that Indigenous Peoples are able to use their lands and resources however they choose, and that they are included in a consultation process if any development projects are proposed on their land.

Permanent Observer status for Indigenous Peoples would mean that Indigenous Peoples could have direct participation through their own governments and councils.

Indigenous Peoples have the right to establish their own education and knowledge systems in order to accurately teach future generations about their histories, values, beliefs and languages.

States should work with indigenous communities to implement climate change initiatives which protect the lands and resources of Indigenous Peoples, through an ecosystem-based approach and enforceable safeguards. 

The UAE’s presidential priorities include a significant language change from previous years, referring to “the inevitable and responsible phase-down of all fossil fuels.” 

Cultural Survival attended COP28 in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, and spoke to some of the delegates who attended.

Rodion Sulyandziga (Odege) from Russia believes that Indigenous Peoples should combine optimism with strategic action to advance their agendas despite facing challenges. To achieve this, he suggests mobilizing all available partners and resources and pushing for meaningful change collaboratively.

El Día Internacional de la Madre Tierra, que se conmemora el 22 de abril de cada año, fue proclamado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en el 2009 con el objetivo de reconocer que “la Tierra y sus ecosistemas son nuestro hogar”, así como recordar que es necesario “alcanzar un justo equilibrio entre las necesidades económicas, sociales y ambientales de las generaciones presentes y futuras”; este día brinda también la oportunidad de generar conciencia “acerca de los problemas que afectan a la Tierra y a las diferentes formas de vida que en ella se desarrollan”. 

Con el fin de evaluar los esfuerzos globales para hacer frente al cambio climático y buscar soluciones, año con año se realiza la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático, que en esta ocasión se está llevando a cabo en Dubai del 30 de noviembre al 12 de diciembre. Integrantes de Cultural Survival están presentes en la COP 28, y han logrado platicar con algunos delegados de los Pueblos Indígenas.
