Por el Derecho al Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado, los gobiernos tienen que mantener a las comunidades indígenas informadas sobre cualquier proyecto que quieran desarrollar en sus tierras y escuchar sus opiniones antes de realizarlo.

El Derecho al Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado corresponde a todas las personas indígenas.

Las comunidades indígenas no deben dejar al gobierno seguir violando su derecho al Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado e destruyendo sus tierras.

Es necesario que las comunidades indígenas eligen líderes que estén comprometidos con la lucha de los pueblos y no con los intereses del gobierno.

El Artículo 10 de la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas afirma que no se puede desplazar a la fuerza a las comunidades indígenas de sus territorios.

Los Estados deben obtener el consentimiento libre, previo e informado de los pueblos indígenas antes de aplicar medidas legislativas o administrativas que los puedan afectar.

Los gobiernos no pueden almacenar materiales peligrosos en las tierras de los pueblos indígenas sin su consentimiento libre, previo e informado.

El Estado debe obtener el consentimiento libre, previo e informado antes de aprobar cualquier proyecto de desarrollo que afecte las tierras y recursos de los pueblos indígenas.

La Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas junto con otros instrumentos internacionales reconocen el derecho al consentimiento libre, previo e informado como un derecho de los pueblos indígenas.

Para los pueblos indígenas, el Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado es un derecho fundamental, inherente e inalienable.

This program is dedicated to Joan Carling, an activist from the Kankanaey people of the Philippines. She has served as an Expert Member on the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues during 2014 and 2016, and as the Secretary General of the Asia Indigenous Pact. In this interview, she explains the benefits of the participation of Indigenous Peoples in local and global decision-making, which would bring a diversity of perspective and solutions to pressing issues.

Vicky Tauli-Corpuz (Igorot Kankanaey, Philippines), a long-time activist and UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, shares her experience with successes of small, local groups reaching out to the international community to collaborate in better defending their rights. She explains how her experience as a nurse led to community engagement, which quickly turned into a passion for advocating for the needs of community members as an activist.

What is most important to note, is that our elderly are the most vulnerable. We need to take extra precaution to save the lives of the ones who are dear to us, and the ones who have shown us the way to go, who have guided our feet on the path that we all walk.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.
