COP28 Loss And Damage Explained - Kimaren Ole Riamit

The establishment of the Loss and Damage fund at COP27 was a significant accomplishment, but the actualization of these funds remains uncertain based on past experiences. In 2009, developed nations promised to generate $100 billion annually by 2020 to support developing countries in transitioning to renewable energy and preparing for future climate-related hazards. But funds have consistently fallen short.

COP28 - Climate Change Hits Us Hard!

The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international climate summit, which is held annually unless the Parties (the countries involved) decide otherwise. At COPs, world leaders gather to work together on solutions to tackle climate change. There are now 198 Parties (197 countries plus the European Union) to the Convention, constituting near universal membership.
Cultural Survival attended COP28 in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, and spoke to some of the delegates who attended.

COP28 - We Do Our Best To Defend The Earth, Yet We Are The Most Affected

The UAE’s presidential priorities include a significant language change from previous years, referring to “the inevitable and responsible phase-down of all fossil fuels.”

COP28 - Funding Needs To Filter Down To People On The Ground

Despite the mechanisms in place to address climate change, including loss and damage, Indigenous peoples are still being left behind. The funding does not reach them directly, their rights are not respected, and even the new loss and damage fund excludes them. Gideon believes that we must continue to fight until the fund reaches those who need it the most.

COP28 - Indigenous Rights Needs To Be Prioritized

Climate change is having a devastating impact on Indigenous communities, leading to droughts, floods, resource conflicts, displacement, and food insecurity. We urgently require access to water, support for our livelihoods, and a green economy that is based on Indigenous knowledge and respect. At COP28, it is crucial to establish a code of conduct that prioritizes Indigenous rights, protocols, and free, prior, informed consent. We must prioritize sustainable development over profit.

Indigenous Pathways For Wellbeing

Researcher Elizabeth Hacker describes research about how Indigenous individuals create their own frameworks to define "well-being" to counter Western ideas of well-being. She found three important concepts for Indigenous well being are, Meeting basic material needs; social harmony and sense of belonging; and cultural identity. COP27 -Tunga Rai It Is Time To Implement The Paris Agreement

The International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change, the official caucus for Indigenous Peoples participating in the UNFCCC processes, which held its preparatory meeting on 5th and 6th November prior to UNFCCC COP27 and had a discussion on a range of issues relating to climate change to come into agreement specifically on what Indigenous Peoples will be negotiating for, in specific UNFCCC processes.

We Are One - Indigenous Peoples And Conservation

Indigenous Peoples play a crucial role in the conservation of the environment and ecosystems, as their survival very much depends on water, land, and natural resources. Indigenous Peoples are often called the custodians or stewards of the Earth. It is estimated that 25 percent of the earth's land surface is occupied, owned, and managed by Indigenous Peoples. This is no coincidence as Indigenous cultures are rooted in relationships with lands and territories.

COP28 - Indigenous Peoples With Disabilities Must Also Be Heard

Pratima Gurung, is the Secretary General of the Indigenous Person with Disabilities Global Network (IPWDGN) and National Indigenous Disabled Women Association Nepal (NIDWAN). She believes that indigenous people with disabilities are affected disproportionately by climate change, but their voices are not being heard in the important negotiations that will shape our future. She thinks that there should be a formal recognition of their issues and dedicated constituencies within these discussions.

COP28 - Nothing About Us Without Us - Tunga Rai

Tunga Rai emphasizes the importance of Indigenous voices being included in discussions that concern their communities. The call for inclusion is echoed through the phrase "Nothing about us without us".  True progress can only be made when Indigenous voices are present at the table.
