Os estados devem obter Consentimento Livre, Prévio, e Informado antes de aprovar qualquer projeto de desenvolvimento que afetaria as terras e os recursos dos Povos Indígenas.

A Declaração das Nações Unidas sobre os Direitos dos Povos Indígenas, junto com outros instrumentos internacionais, reconhece o direito a Consetimento Livre, Prévio e Informado como um direito dos Povos Indígenas.

Para os Povos Indígenas, o direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado é um direito fundamental, inerente e inalienável. 

Os governos são obrigados a cumprir com o direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado que têm todos os Povos Indígenas. Os governos precisam informar e ouvir as opiniões dos Povos Indígenas sobre si eles dão o consentimento deles aos projetos que lhes afetam.

 É importante que as comunidades Indígenas tenham suficiente tempo antes do começo dum projeto para ter discussões e tomar decisões sobre as mudanças potencias. 

É importante ter toda a informação sobre os impactos potenciais no meio ambiente, na comunidade, e nas pessoas. A informação deve ser disponível em uma maneira compreensível e na língua natural das pessoas afectadas. 

O direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio, e Informado é estipulado nas leis nacionais e internacionais, e deve ser aplicado quando qualquer tipo de projeto está planejado nas terras das comunidades Indígenas, especialmente quando há risco de dano irreparável nestas terras.

É importante exigir que os governos e as empresas cumprem com esta lei porque protege o meio ambiente, garantia água e ar limpo, e é um mecanismo de controlar os projetos de desenvolvimento para assegurar um benefício verdadeiro para as comunidades Indígenas.

O direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado manifesta claramente que os governos não devem forçar as pessoas a mudar de ideias, valores, ou as formas tradicionais de tomar decisões e de organizar-se. Também, eles não devem espalhar informação imprecisa para informar erroneamente os Povos Indígenas. 

Para assegurar que o direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio, e Informado é respeitado, as comunidades Indígenas deveriam ter reuniões comunitárias que informam as pessoas sobre que está passando e que poderia passar. Além disso, projetos devem ser supervisionados para garantir que as decisões das reuniões comunitárias são implementadas.

Para aplicar o direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado corretamente, é importante saber que é aplicável a todos os Povos Indígenas. Os governos e as empresas têm que respeitar as formas de comunicação das populações Indígenas, e os representantes do governo, das empresas, e das comunidades devem juntar-se para negociar e chegar a um acordo que beneficia à comunidade.

Para uma população ter um acesso justo ao direito a Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado, o seguinte deve ser respeitado: 1) As populações indígenas devem ser consultadas antes de já iniciando o projeto. 2) Tempo suficiente deve ser dado a toda comunidade para receber toda informação necessaria relacionado com o projeto e seus implicações. 3) A informação deve ser distribuido de acordo com os costumes tradicionais destas populações. 4) As populações devem chegar a suas próprias opiniões sem nenhuma forma de manipulação. 5) Todas as decisões deverem ser documentadas em detalhe.

While we adhere to the precautionary measures that prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is important to strengthen the defenses in our body through responsible and healthy nourishment. Having a healthy immune system means that our bodies can fight the virus.
Within the community there are a great variety of foods that grow and are produced that can cover the needs of our families and of those elders who live alone.

While countries all over the world are on lockdown, and panic is the order of the day, this is a time when Indigenous Peoples around the world are encouraged to stay calm, and be strong, in the face of severe adversity.
What is most important to note, is that our elderly are the most vulnerable. We need to take extra precaution to save the lives of the ones who are dear to us, and the ones who have shown us the way to go, who have guided our feet on the path that we all walk.

The Covid-19 Pandemic is upon us, and we all need to adhere to all the hygiene protocols.
While it is important to ensure the well-being of our elders in the time of this global pandemic, let us take care of our children too. If this is new for us, imagine the psychological impact it has on our young ones. Take the time to explain it to them, first hand, as opposed to what they see and hear on social media, television and radio.

Limited access to basic health services remains a big problem for Indigenous communities across all continents. Indigenous populations in many countries have experienced poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. Mainstream health services have not adequately met the health needs of Indigenous Peoples in both rural and urban settings.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.

Covid-19 is still a grave reality, now with a new strain of the virus spreading across the world. When the pandemic first began, we did not expect it to last this long, and no one expected that it would spread so widely and have such a disastrous impact. As we move into 2021, it continues to be crucial to maintain social distance, avoid large groups of people, wash or sanitize our hands and wear masks consistently to stop the spread of the virus.
