October is pride month in South Africa. We spoke to Denver Toroga Breda, an Indigenous language activist from Cape Town, on being Indigenous and belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.

In October 2020, a group of people representing different Khoi and San Tribes gathered at the foot of Table Mountain in South Africa. There they have created a cultural space where they will stay for an indefinite period of time in an effort to reclaim the mountain. With the temporary huts providing a little shelter, and fire providing a little warmth, they are making it known that the mountain and the area surrounding it had once belonged to their ancestors. Bradley van Sitters is among the folks camped out at the foot of the mountain.

We interview Wilhelmina Van Dyk who coordinated the Khoikhoi language gathering in South Africa. This event put the Khoekhoegowab language in the spotlight and left attendees with basic vocabulary of the language after a few days.

For this reason, there is global talk of the need for a transition towards the use of cleaner energy sources and the development of technologies such as battery storage systems, and other cleaner sources of energy. However, for the creation of these energy sources, so-called “transition minerals” are necessary, the extraction of which increases the danger of new displacements and the dispossession of territories from Indigenous Peoples.

Jitsvinger (real name Quintin Goliath) is a celebrated South African artist from the Cape Flats known for fusing hip hop, poetry, theatre, and storytelling into a distinctive performance style rooted in Afrikaaps—the vernacular Afrikaans dialect of Cape Town. In this radio interview, Jitsvinger tells us about how his heritage influenced his music. We hear how Indigenous Khoi and San languages mixed with Dutch and languages from others who were brought to South Africa as slaves, contributed to the formation of Afrikaans, and how this heritage influences his music.

UNESCO calls on radio stations to celebrate World Radio Day's 10th anniversary and the more than 110 years of radio. Cultural Survival's Indigenous Rights Radio supported the Khwe people from the Okavango region in starting Khwedam Radio – a radio station that will assist the Khwe and !Xun speaking San Peoples  to be able to communicate better with each other in remote regions of Namibia.

Limited access to basic health services remains a big problem for Indigenous communities across all continents. Indigenous populations in many countries have experienced poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. Mainstream health services have not adequately met the health needs of Indigenous Peoples in both rural and urban settings.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.

Covid-19 is still a grave reality, now with a new strain of the virus spreading across the world. When the pandemic first began, we did not expect it to last this long, and no one expected that it would spread so widely and have such a disastrous impact. As we move into 2021, it continues to be crucial to maintain social distance, avoid large groups of people, wash or sanitize our hands and wear masks consistently to stop the spread of the virus.

Le droit au consentement libre, préalable et éclairé signifie que les gouvernements doivent informer les communautés autochtones des projets de développement dans leurs territoires, et écouter leurs opinions avant de commencer aucun projet.

Dès la naissance, tout être humain a des droits inaliénables et en tant que peuple autochtone, nous avons le droit au consentement libre, préalable et éclairé. Ce droit vaut pour tout le monde quel que soit le pays d'ou vous venez, et il doit être appliqué des lors qu'un gouvernement tente d’exploiter les ressources naturelles dans nos communautés. Et ce particulièrement quand ces projets risquent de provoquer des changements nuisibles à nos terres.

A chaque saison, je m'inquiète de notre (mauvaise) récolte; nous n’avons plus assez de terres agricoles depuis que l'entreprise s’est installée dans notre communauté. C'est vrai, on a pris nos terres sans notre consentement préalable, libre et éclairé. Ce droit oblige toute entreprise ou gouvernement d'informer, de consulter et d'écouter les peuples autochtones avant d'exploiter leurs terres. Agissons donc pour responsabiliser cette entreprise.

Je suis un autochtone. J’ai donc le droit au consentement préalable, libre et éclairé, mais les gouvernements élaborent beaucoup de stratégies afin de ne pas respecter ce droit. Une des stratégies est d’identifier les chefs de région dans nos communautés et de les persuader de travailler exclusivement dans l’intérêt du gouvernement ou d’une société de promotion plutôt que dans celui de la communauté qu’ils représentent. Et ce en se servant de pots-de-vin, en leur offrant des emplois et en élaborant d’autres stratégies.

Pour les communautés autochtones, le droit au consentement préalable, donné librement et en connaissance de cause est soutenu par l’article 10 de la Déclaration des Droits des Peuples Autochtones de l’ONU. Il déclare que les gouvernements ne peuvent ni déplacer les communautés autochtones de leurs terres ou territoires par la force, ni effectuer des projets sur les terres des peuples autochtones sans leur consentement préalable, libre et éclairé.

L’article dix-neuf de la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones déclare : Les États se concertent et coopèrent de bonne foi avec les peuples autochtones intéressés — par l’intermédiaire de leurs propres institutions représentatives — avant d’adopter et d’appliquer des mesures législatives ou administratives susceptibles de concerner les peuples
autochtones, afin d’obtenir leur consentement préalable, donné
librement et en connaissance de cause.

En tant que peuples autochtones nous avons le droit de vivre dans des communautés sûres, et quand il y a des changements qui s'opèrent sur nos terres nous devrions revendiquer l'application de l’article 29 de la Déclaration des Nations-Unis sur les droits des peuples autochtones. Cet article affirme que les peuples autochtones doivent accorder leur consentement préalable, libre et éclairé avant que des matières dangereuses ne soient stockées ou déchargées sur leurs terres.

Aucune exploitation ne peut être faite sur nos terres sans appliquer au préalable l’article trente-deux de la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones. Ce droit affirme que les états doivent obtenir le consentement préalable, libre et éclairé des peuples autochtones avant que tout projet de développement, pouvant altérer les terres et les ressources des peuples autochtones, ne soit approuvé; notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en valeur, l’utilisation ou l’exploitation des ressources minérales, hydriques ou autres.
