The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. Chad Valdez (Diné) is a writer currently residing in Denver, CO, and working as a bookseller. He holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts in Fiction with a minor in Native American studies from New Mexico State University where he was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. He has taught undergraduate courses in English and Creative Writing where he was able to share his love of Indigenous storytelling and understanding of epistemology. His writing has appeared in Windward Review, CBR.com among other outlets. This is Chads audio story called 'Split Decision'.

The world's largest Indigenous gathering, the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, kicked off its 23rd session at UN Headquarters in New York. Indigenous delegates will champion self-determination and sovereignty for their communities, with a special focus on amplifying the voices of Indigenous youth. Cultural Survival is also attending the gatherings interviewing indigenous delegates about their self-determined priorities and their readiness to engage in high-level UN discussions.

“El grito de la libertad” es un podcast producido por la organización boliviana Qhana Pukara Kurmi y en él se dan a conocer las luchas de “los Pueblos Indígenas Originarios contra el extractivismo”. En el primer episodio, titulado “El caso del Ayllu Acre Antequera”, se habla sobre la lucha de dicho Ayllu contra la minería y en defensa de su territorio, que “ha sido avasallado desde épocas coloniales” y actualmente se enfrenta al despojo “por parte de sindicatos y grandes transnacionales apoyadas por el Estado boliviano”. ¡Te invitamos a conocer más sobre este tema!

Desde hace varios años, las y los pobladores del Ayllu Acre Antequera en el departamento de Oruro, Bolivia, están defendiendo su territorio, ya que han llegado empresas mineras a realizar actividades de exploración y explotación de manera ilegal y sin respetar el derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas a la Consulta Libre, Previa e Informada.

Las mujeres son las principales defensoras y, a pesar de constantes ataques violentos que las ha obligado a salir de su comunidad, siguen exigiendo que la minería salga de su territorio.

On the South Coast of South Africa, is a small town called Arniston, where local people, who are descendants of Khoi and San people, make a living as small-scale fishers.
Arniston also has ancient fish traps, dating back thousands of years.
Arniston is a charming coastal town located in the Overberg region of South Africa. It is situated near Cape Agulhas, which is widely known as the southernmost tip of Africa.

In Episode 1 we traveled to Arniston, South Africa, the location of ancient fish traps that were used by Khoi and San people, where we interviewed Rowina Europa , a small-scale fisherwoman. Come with us as we journey to Gordons Bay, South Africa, where we hear from local fisherfolk, about it impact of climate change on small scale fishers.
