UNESCO's study on Indigenous Peoples and Media, focusing on UN Declaration Article 16, aims to bridge gaps in Indigenous language media access. We will present recommendations to states for enhanced recognition and resourcing. Indigenous Rights Radio Producer Dev Kumar Sunuwar spoke to Sheryl Lightfoot, Member of Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), one of the experts attending the Expert Meeting and Media Partnership Forum on Indigenous Peoples and the Media, held from 26-27 November 2024 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

UNESCO's global study on Indigenous media analyzes challenges and opportunities, supporting Indigenous peoples' right to establish their own media per the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Article 16. The Secretariat of the Permanent Forum (SPFII) and the Department of Global Communications (DGC), in partnership with Cultural Survival, is organizing an Indigenous Media Zone during the 24th session of the Permanent Forum in 2025. This will allow Indigenous media, journalists and platforms an opportunity to report on the session through Indigenous worldviews, perspectives and languages. Cultural Survival interviewed some of the delegates at the Permanent Forum in New York.

Indigenous communities in Honduras have stewarded the Muskitia, a rain forest which includes one of the richest concentrations of biodiversity in the world, for centuries. Osvaldo Munguia is a representative of MOPAWI, an organization that partners with Indigenous groups to protect this UNESCO world heritage site from being overtaken by logging, mining, and forestry business interests.

Indigenous communities face compounded challenges due to climate-induced displacement. Forced relocations not only disrupt their physical environment but also erode traditional governance structures, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs, leading to significant mental health issues. The loss of ancestral lands and the erosion of cultural identity pose profound threats to the well-being and resilience of Indigenous peoples.On June 20th, 2025 let us stand in solidarity with all those who had to flee from their homes to seek safety and shelter.
