Los pueblos indígenas tienen el derecho para vivir de acuerdo con su visión del mundo, sus principios y creencias. Tienen la soberanía sobre sus tierras, comida, agua y recursos.

Desde hace varios años, pueblos y comunidades Indígenas en el Sureste de México, que comprende Estados como Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán y Quintana Roo, se enfrentan a todo tipo de megaproyectos en sus territorios. Cientos de hectáreas de selvas han sido devastadas para dar paso a monocultivos de soya, sorgo y arroz; también para la instalación de mega granjas de cerdos, parques eólicos y fotovoltaicos, y recientemente, para el paso del llamado Tren Maya. 

El derecho del Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado significa que los pueblos indígenas pueden usar sus tierras y recursos como los que quieran. También, el derecho significa que los pueblos indígenas están incluidos en una consulta si alguno proyecto de desarrollo está propuesto en su tierra.

El Día Internacional de la Madre Tierra, que se conmemora el 22 de abril de cada año, fue proclamado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en el 2009 con el objetivo de reconocer que “la Tierra y sus ecosistemas son nuestro hogar”, así como recordar que es necesario “alcanzar un justo equilibrio entre las necesidades económicas, sociales y ambientales de las generaciones presentes y futuras”; este día brinda también la oportunidad de generar conciencia “acerca de los problemas que afectan a la Tierra y a las diferentes formas de vida que en ella se desarrollan”. 

The Coalition to Secure the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Green Economy is known as the SIRGE coalition. Members of the SIRGE coalition came together prior to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in April 2023, in New York. In this podcast, we hear from Galina Angarova, Executive Director of Cultural Survival and co-chair of the Executive Committee of the SIRGE Coalition.

Indigenous Peoples own at least a quarter of the earth's surface. Many of our territories are rich in essential minerals that are required for the energy transition. It is necessary to raise awareness about the impact that the green economy causes in the places where we live.

As Indigenous Peoples, we make great contributions to the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity, and we own land that is rich in minerals, essential to the energy transition. For these reasons, the SIRGE Coalition seeks to increase Indigenous leadership and make our voices heard by governments and companies involved in this process. El pueblo Emberá, en Panamá, históricamente ha habitado en las cercanías del Río Bayano, que desde la primera mitad del siglo XX comenzó a ser amenazado por la construcción de la Hidroeléctrica Bayano. Este proyecto finalmente se llevó a cabo en los años 70 e inundó gran parte de la Reserva Indígena habitada por la comunidad Majé Emberá Drua. En aquel momento se estableció que el Estado panameño proveería el área necesaria para la reubicación de los moradores de la Reserva, pero  hasta la actualidad esto no se ha cumplido y la exigencia de justicia permanece.

Le droit au consentement libre, préalable et éclairé signifie que les peuples autochtones sont en mesure d'utiliser leurs terres et leurs ressources comme ils le souhaitent, et qu'ils sont inclus dans tout processus de consultation pour n’importe quel projet de développement proposé sur leurs terres.
