Indigenous storytelling production company Wapanatahk Media has reached a television development deal with Anthony Johnson and Dr. James Makokis, a Two-Spirit Indigenous couple and winners of season 7 of The Amazing Race Canada.

The factual series will follow Johnson and Makokis as they pursue their mission to educate the masses about Indigenous cultural teachings, helping Canadians embark on their own transformational journeys and welcoming them into Nizhoni Acres, the couple's dream property, which they are currently renovating using the prize money from Amazing Race.

Deidre Jantjies is an Indigenous South African Film producer. Her animated web series called Stories van die wind (Stories of the wind), was recently screened at The Wairoa Maori Indigenous Film Festival in New Zealand. Deidre tells us about using animation to tell our own stories.

The right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent is stated in national and international laws, and can be applied in defence of lands and territories when there is a project that will cause irreparable damage.

Cualquiera que sea el género, la música ha representado para los Pueblos Indígenas y el mundo, una especie de terapia e incluso se puede decir que es fundamental para la vida y armonía del ser humano.

Las mujeres Indígenas dentro de sus comunidades han cumplido con un rol primordial en la conservación de su cultura, tradiciones y prácticas ancestrales.

Específicamente, en el pueblo Awá son las mujeres las encargadas de mantener viva la tradición, cultural ancestral y territorios, afirma el Mayor Olinod Paí. Él explica también cómo ellas realizan el trabajo de tejidos tradicionales, lo que nos lleva a un recorrido por el proceso de los tejidos de las mujeres de la comunidad.

It is important to demand that this law is complied with because it protects the environment, guarantees clean water and air, and it is a mechanism of controlling development projects to ensure that truly benefit indigenous communities.

Enseñar y aprender cualquier idioma Indígena es un derecho que nos corresponde como seres humanos y miembros de una comunidad Indígena, tal y como lo indica el el artículo 13 de la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas, en donde se establece que los pueblos tienen derecho a revitalizar, utilizar, fomentar y transmitir a las generaciones futuras sus lenguas, tradiciones orales, sistemas de escritura y literaturas.

The right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent clearly states that the government should not force people to change their method of organisation, thinking, or decision making, nor spread inaccurate information to misinform Indigenous Peoples.

In order to ensure that the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent is complied with, there should be community meetings which make people aware of what is happening and could happen in their area. In addition to this, projects must be supervised in order to ensure that decisions made in the community meetings, are implemented during the development project.

For the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent to be correctly applied, it is important to know that this right is applicable to all Indigenous Peoples. It must be adhered to with respect for indigenous communities’ own methods of communication and each person’s opinion must be heard. Furthermore, it means that there should be meetings with representatives of the government, companies, and Indigenous Peoples in order to arrive at an agreement that benefits the community.

In order for this right to be applied fairly, it should respect the following: 1. From the start of a project, there should be a consultation with the Indigenous People of the area; 2. There should be sufficient time devoted to ensuring that the community receive all of the information about the projects and its impacts; 3. Information should be distributed in accordance with the traditional ways of each community; 4. Any form of trying to influence the opinions of the people should be avoided; 5. All the details of decisions taken should be recorded.

Certo! È il diritto che hanno le nostre comunità di essere
informate dal governo sull’attività mineraria, il petrolio, l’acqua
ed altri progetti che potrebbe realizzare nelle nostre comunità.
Per di più, il governo ha l’obbligo di ascoltare e valutare le
nostre opinioni così insieme possiamo arrivare ad un accordo
prima che il progetto sia eseguito.

Persona 1:
Dalla nascita, ogni essere umano ha certi diritti che non
possono essere sottratti, e come Persone Indigene, abbiamo
il diritto ad un consenso libero, precedente ed informarto.

Persona 2:
Non importa di quale paese sei, questo diritto riguarda tutti
noi e dovrebbe essere messo in atto quando il governo
intende sfruttare le risorse naturali all’interno delle nostre
comunità, specialmente quando questi progetti potrebbero
provocare cambiamenti dannosi alle nostre terre.

Persona 1:
Ogni stagione mi preoccupo della nostra mancanza di
raccolto; semplicemente non abbiamo abbastanza terra
da quando la compagnia si è trasferita nella nostra
comunità.

precedente, ed informato è sostenuto dall’articolo 10 della
Dichiarazione delle Nazioni Unite sui Diritti delle Persone
Indigene, che afferma che i governi non possono dislocare
forzatamente le comunità indigene dalle loro terre o territori
nè realizzare qualsiasi progetto contrattuale sulle terre delle
persone indigene senza il loro consenso libero, precedente ed
informato.

In light of the upcoming United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages, Cultural Survival is held a 3-day virtual conference, "Restoring and Protecting Our Native Languages and Landscapes.” The purpose of this conference was to equip individuals working at the community level with tools and best practices for revitalizing and strengthening Indigenous languages and the Traditional Ecological Knowledge carried within them.
The conference was held from October 5th to October 7th, 2021.
