In December 2021 Oil giant Shell's plans to conduct seismic surveys off South Africa's Wild Coast to prospect for oil and gas reserves below the seabed have been temporarily halted by an online petition by environmentalists, indigenous groups, and fisheries organizations.
According to a recent communiqué by Natural Justice, an organization that focuses on human rights and environmental law in Africa,
Greenpeace Africa and Natural Justice have applied to join the court case, brought by the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) and Richard Spoor Attorneys on behalf of Wild Coast communities and small-scale fishers.
