En 1959, los Estados miembros de las Naciones Unidas aprobaron la Declaración Universal de los Derechos del Niño, y 30 años después, en 1989, la Convención de los Derechos del Niño. En ambos documentos se establecen una serie de derechos para las infancias, entre ellos el derecho a la vida, a la salud, a la educación, a jugar, a la protección frente a la violencia y discriminación y a que se escuchen sus opiniones.
