El proceso de negociación entre el gobierno y los pueblos indígenas debe ser libre de amenazas, sobornos, o cualquier manipulación por parte del gobierno en las decisiones de los pobladores.

Describe la importancia de atener la información adecuada de un proyecto previamente, para que los indígenas de la región en cuestión puedan tener un discurso apropiado sobre los cambios que se implicarían.

Explica la importancia de tener toda la información sobre los impactos al medioambiente, a la comunidad y a los pobladores. Se debe dar en manera completa y en el idioma materno para asegurar comprensión total.

Para asegurar que se cumpla con el derecho al consentimiento libre previo e informado se pueden realizar sesiones comunitarias para estar enterados en todo lo que sucede o pueda suceder en el pueblo. Adjunto, se tiene que mantener la supervisión de los proyectos para asegurar que las cosas se realicen como se decidió dentro de las sesiones.

La Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas junto con otros instrumentos internacionales reconocen el derecho al consentimiento libre, previo e informado como un derecho de los pueblos indígenas.

The Covid-19 Pandemic is upon us, and we all need to adhere to all the hygiene protocols.
While it is important to ensure the well-being of our elders in the time of this global pandemic, let us take care of our children too. If this is new for us, imagine the psychological impact it has on our young ones. Take the time to explain it to them, first hand, as opposed to what they see and hear on social media, television and radio.

Durante la pandemia de Covid-19, las mujeres han vivido un incremento de las tareas domésticas y de cuidados. De acuerdo con información del Consejo Nacional de Evaluación de la Política de Desarrollo Social (CONEVAL) de México, en 2018 las mujeres dedicaban 22 horas por semana a quehaceres domésticos y 28 horas al cuidado de otras personas, cifras que aumentaron todavía más durante la pandemia. 

El agua es un bien común imprescindible para la vida, sin embargo, muchos pueblos y comunidades Indígenas carecen de acceso a agua limpia y potable. Durante la pandemia por Covid-19, este vital líquido ha resultado aún más importante en la preparación de alimentos y medicinas, el aseo personal y el lavado constante de las manos. No obstante, para millones de personas este servicio es irregular o nulo, afectando principalmente a las mujeres Indígenas, que son las responsables del cuidado de la familia. 

La pandemia de Covid-19 sigue causando estragos a nivel mundial, por lo cual es indispensable que los integrantes de pueblos y comunidades Indígenas continuemos cuidándonos, especialmente frente al desarrollo de nuevas variantes de esta enfermedad respiratoria. Una de las formas de cuidarnos es alimentándonos sanamente. ¿Sabes cómo hacerlo? 

Por el Derecho al Consentimiento Libre, Previo e Informado, los gobiernos tienen que mantener a las comunidades indígenas informadas sobre cualquier proyecto que quieran desarrollar en sus tierras y escuchar sus opiniones antes de realizarlo.

El Estado debe obtener el consentimiento libre, previo e informado antes de aprobar cualquier proyecto de desarrollo que afecte las tierras y recursos de los pueblos indígenas.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud ha señalado que el Coronavirus ha afectado a más de 170 países. Este virus causa enfermedades que van desde el resfriado común hasta enfermedades más graves.

En respuesta a esta emergencia mundial, los pueblos Indígenas se han organizado y creado material radiofónico en sus propios idiomas ejerciendo así el derecho a estar informados. Tal es el caso de la Organización Indígena de Colombia ONIC quien ha trabajado una serie especial en idioma Chamí sobre prevención y cuidado ante esta crisis sanitaria por coronavirus.

When the pandemic first began, we did not expect it to last this long, and no one expected that it would spread so widely and have such a disastrous impact. As we move into 2021, it continues to be crucial to maintain social distance, avoid large groups of people, wash or sanitize our hands and wear masks consistently to stop the spread of the virus.

Limited access to basic health services remains a big problem for Indigenous communities across all continents. Indigenous populations in many countries have experienced poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. Mainstream health services have not adequately met the health needs of Indigenous Peoples in both rural and urban settings.

After months of clinical trials by many companies in different countries, several vaccines, which are 94-95% effective, have finally been approved and are now making their way to hospitals, clinics and doctors rooms. Successful trials of the vaccines have taken place with medical professionals and the elderly. Vaccines against COVID-19 will be available to us soon.

The WCIP was a meeting of the UN General Assembly where the concerns of Indigenous Peoples were discussed, along with best practices on how to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

This series of 24 PSAs is based on the Outcome Document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, which took place in September of 2014 in New York. The PSAs highlight specific passages of the Outcome Document in an effort to inform audiences of exactly what the document contains and encourage action.

The WCIP Outcome Document analyses the existing UN mechanisms for implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and details ways in which they can be improved.
