Los pueblos y comunidades Indígenas del mundo administran o mantienen la tenencia de más del 25% de la superficie terrestre y sustentan alrededor del 80% de la biodiversidad mundial. En sus territorios hay selvas, bosques y otros ecosistemas que han sido resguardados desde tiempos ancestrales junto a cientos de variedades de plantas, hongos y animales. Este es el caso de la comunidad purépecha de Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacán, México, en cuyos bosques de propiedad comunal se conservan distintas variedades de hongos comestibles.
