Mariia Savvina (Sakha) is an independent artist, fashion designer, and creator of the fashion brand o5o who is originally from Yakutsk, Sakha Republic. In this conversation, Mariia tells us about her training and journey as an artist and her experiences showing her collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia. She also talks about her practice of melding Sakha traditions with the contemporary and the importance this fusing has on both personal and professional levels.

Indigenous Peoples have the right to live according to their worldview, principles and beliefs. They have sovereignty over their land, food, water and resources.

Indigenous communities need to work with States to develop mechanisms that prevent violence against women.

States should work with indigenous communities to ensure that national laws reflect the rights of Indigenous Peoples as laid out in the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The rights of Indigenous Peoples must be enacted fully and mechanisms which monitor and review the implementation of these rights are needed to ensure that States are complying with international law.

The right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent means that Indigenous Peoples are able to use their lands and resources however they choose, and that they are included in a consultation process if any development projects are proposed on their land.

Permanent Observer status for Indigenous Peoples would mean that Indigenous Peoples could have direct participation through their own governments and councils.

Indigenous Peoples have the right to establish their own education and knowledge systems in order to accurately teach future generations about their histories, values, beliefs and languages.

States should work with indigenous communities to implement climate change initiatives which protect the lands and resources of Indigenous Peoples, through an ecosystem-based approach and enforceable safeguards. 

The UAE’s presidential priorities include a significant language change from previous years, referring to “the inevitable and responsible phase-down of all fossil fuels.” 

Cultural Survival attended COP28 in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, and spoke to some of the delegates who attended.

Rodion Sulyandziga (Odege) from Russia believes that Indigenous Peoples should combine optimism with strategic action to advance their agendas despite facing challenges. To achieve this, he suggests mobilizing all available partners and resources and pushing for meaningful change collaboratively.

During every COP gathering, individuals and organisations who defend the land and environment, as well as Indigenous communities, voice their need for increased safeguards for their territories against industries that harm the environment, including mining, logging, and industrial agriculture. Climate organizations like Global Witness frequently send delegates to advocate for quick and ambitious measures to address the climate emergency.

Suzanne Benally is a leader in Indigenous Rights advocacy, and serves as the Executive Director of Cultural Survival. She shares her thoughts on the challenges and opportunities facing Native American communities and Indigenous Peoples in general in the context of the Trump administration. The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a high-level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. The Forum was established on 28 July 2000 by with the mandate to deal with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health, and human rights.
Andrea Carmen (Yaqui) from the International Indian Treaty Council was there in the beginning, and in this radio program, she tells us all about the history of the forum, the present state of the forum, and the forum of tomorrow.
