Slavery played a significant role in the early history of Paarl, Western Cape, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries under Dutch and later British colonial rule. Enslaved people—brought mainly from East Africa, Madagascar, India, and Southeast Asia, as well as Indigenous Khoisan people—were forced to work on farms, vineyards, and in households, forming the backbone of the local agricultural economy. Their labour was central to the development of Paarl’s wine and wheat industries.

Michelle Shanandoah is the founder of the non-profit organization Rematriation, which is dedicated to uplifting the voices of Indigenous women. Raised in a family of traditional leadership, she carries the values and responsibilities of her Haudenosaunee heritage throughout her life.

Stephanie Thorassie is the Executive Director of the Seal River Watershed Alliance. Her work as an Indigenous leader and defender of the land has become the subject of a documentary film called “We Are Made from the Land: Protecting the Seal River Watershed.”
The film is a powerful documentary that tells an inspiring story of healing, community, and vision. It shows how Indigenous Peoples are working to protect the land and the caribou, while striving to create a more sustainable and equitable future for everyone.
We spoke to Stephanie recently.

La implementación de estos derechos es muy dificil, pero Maria dice que es importante seguir luchando por la defensa de comunidades y Pueblos Indígenas del mundo.

States should work with indigenous women and their communities to enable programmes around capacity building and strengthening of leadership. Indigenous women need to be included in decision making processes, at each level and in all areas.

Lemoine LaPointe, a Lakota of South Dakota and Minnesota, speaks about community conversations and their importance in providing support for Indigenous Peoples and their relationship with the surrounding region both in the present and in the future.  We met up with Lemoine at the UNPFII 2015.
